South Asian wedding invitations in the USA have a bigger job than most. They need to show several events, each with its own time, venue, dress note and guest list. They also need to reach relatives in Nepal, India, the UK or the Gulf, who live in other time zones and may need months to plan the trip.

The simple answer: send one clear invitation with a section for every event, and write times in the venue's local time. Add home-country times in your messages to family abroad. Invite overseas guests 8 to 12 months ahead, and call your elders before you send the link.

South Asian Wedding Invitations in the USA: One Invitation, Many Events

A Nepali or South Asian wedding is rarely one event. It is often a series across two to four days, and many guests are invited to only some of them. Even in Nepal, Republica reports that haldi, mehendi and sangeet have become common parts of the wedding week, alongside older family rituals.

Not every guest knows every term. Your friends from work may never have been to a mehndi. A one-line explanation next to each event name helps them feel welcome, not lost.

Event What it is, in one line Who is usually invited Dress note idea
Mehndi (mehendi) Henna is painted on the bride's hands, with music and food Close family and friends Bright colors, easy sleeves
Haldi Family apply turmeric paste to the couple for a glowing start Close family Yellow, and clothes you do not mind staining
Sangeet An evening of music, dance and family performances Family and friends Festive, dressy and comfortable to dance in
Baraat or janti The groom's side arrives in a lively procession with music The groom's family and friends Festive, with shoes for walking
Wedding ceremony The marriage rituals, led by the families Family and invited guests Traditional or formal
Reception Dinner and celebration, often the biggest guest list Everyone invited Formal or cocktail

In Nepali families, janti is the word for the groom's party that travels to the wedding. Many families in the USA use "baraat" and "janti" side by side so both sides of the family recognize it.

How to Write a Multi-Day Wedding Invitation

For a multi-day wedding invitation, give every event the same set of details in the same order. Guests scan for times and places, so a steady layout saves them from rereading.

For each event, include:

  1. The event name with its one-line explanation.
  2. Day and date, with the weekday.
  3. Start time, and an "arrive by" time if the event starts with a procession or a set moment.
  4. Venue name and address, with a map link.
  5. A dress note.
  6. Who is invited, if not everyone.

An Indian wedding invitation website does this well, because each event gets its own section with its own map. A Nimtto invitation, for example, lists every event with its time, venue and a Google Maps link. A printed card struggles to fit five events and still look calm.

Who Is Invited to Which Events

The trickiest part is the guest list. Your aunt is invited to everything. A colleague may be invited only to the reception. The invitation should make that clear without making anyone feel second-tier.

The cleanest way is to send each guest group a version that shows only their events. A reception guest then sees a full, happy invitation to the reception, not a list of things they are left out of. Ask your invitation service how it handles this before you order. If it cannot, send reception guests their own message or card.

Track replies per event, too. Our guide on how to collect RSVPs online explains how to ask about each event separately, so your caterer gets the right count for every night.

A Nepali Wedding in the USA: Names and Dates in Two Scripts

Many families planning a Nepali wedding in the USA want both English and Nepali on the invitation. English helps friends and colleagues. Devanagari speaks to grandparents and relatives back home, and it feels like a real family invitation.

A few rules keep two scripts tidy:

  • Use the same order in both scripts. If the bride's name comes first in English, it comes first in Nepali too.
  • Never machine-translate names. Ask a parent or grandparent to spell every name in Devanagari, then check it again before guests see it.
  • Keep the English date simple. Write "Saturday, June 12, 2027" in English. Many Nepali families also like to add the Bikram Sambat date, so ask an elder to confirm the correct conversion.
  • Do not cram. If both scripts make a section crowded, put the Nepali text in its own short block.

Nimtto's Nepali wedding invitations come in English and Nepali, and a real designer reviews the text with you before any guest sees it.

Wedding Invitations for Family Abroad: Time Zones

Wedding invitations for family abroad should always list times in the venue's local time. Then, in the message you send to each relative, add one line with their own local time. This matters most for calls, video chats with family who cannot travel, and any moment you want them to share from home.

Nepal is on UTC+5:45 and has never used daylight saving time, according to timeanddate. India stays on UTC+5:30 all year, as does the UAE on UTC+4. The USA, however, changes its clocks. In 2027, US daylight saving time runs from March 14 to November 7, per timeanddate, so the gap to Nepal or India changes by one hour twice a year.

Place UTC offset Daylight saving? When it is 6:00 PM in New York in June When it is 6:00 PM in New York in January
New York (ET) UTC-5, or UTC-4 in summer Yes 6:00 PM 6:00 PM
Chicago (CT) UTC-6, or UTC-5 in summer Yes 5:00 PM 5:00 PM
Los Angeles (PT) UTC-8, or UTC-7 in summer Yes 3:00 PM 3:00 PM
London (UK) UTC+0, or UTC+1 in summer Yes 11:00 PM 11:00 PM
Dubai (UAE) UTC+4 No 2:00 AM next day 3:00 AM next day
New Delhi (India) UTC+5:30 No 3:30 AM next day 4:30 AM next day
Kathmandu (Nepal) UTC+5:45 No 3:45 AM next day 4:45 AM next day

Two details catch families out:

  • The UK and US change clocks on different days. UK clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October, says GOV.UK. For a few weeks each spring and fall, London is four hours ahead of New York instead of five.
  • An evening in the USA is early morning in South Asia. A 6:00 PM reception in New York starts before dawn in Kathmandu. Plan any call with grandparents for a morning or lunch event instead.

Inviting Overseas Guests Early: Visas and Letters

Relatives from Nepal, India and many other countries need a US visitor visa (B-2) to attend. Visiting friends or relatives is one of the purposes the US State Department's visitor visa page lists for this visa, but the process takes time, and interview waits differ by city.

That is why timing matters. The Knot suggests sending destination wedding save-the-dates earlier than usual when guests travel far, and 8 to 12 months is a fair target for family overseas. Share the date the moment it is fixed, even before the full invitation is ready. Your relatives can then check the State Department's current visa appointment wait times for their city.

What about an invitation letter?

Many families ask for one. Here the State Department is clear: its visitor visa page says a letter of invitation or affidavit of support is not needed to apply, and it is not one of the factors used to decide whether to issue or deny the visa. Applicants must qualify on their own ties to their home country.

So a letter will not hurt, but it will not guarantee a visa either. If a relative still wants one, keep it short and true: who you are, your relationship, the wedding dates and city, and your contact details.

Elders Who Expect a Call or a Card

For many families, a link alone feels too casual for grandparents, senior relatives and family friends of your parents' generation. The respectful order is simple: a parent calls first, then the link follows.

A few habits help:

  • Let parents make the elder calls. It carries more weight from them than from the couple.
  • Send the link right after the call, so they have the details in hand.
  • Print a handful of cards for the elders who truly expect paper. Most guests can still get the digital invitation.
  • Offer help to open it. A cousin nearby can show a grandparent the invitation and reply on their behalf.

Sending by WhatsApp and Viber

WhatsApp and Viber are how most South Asian families already talk, so they are the natural way to send. With Nimtto, guests open one link with no app download or account needed, which suits relatives of every age.

  • Send personal messages, not one giant group post. A message with the guest's own name feels like an invitation. A group forward feels like an announcement.
  • Use the right app for each relative. Some relatives in Nepal use Viber more than WhatsApp. Ask your parents which app each household checks.
  • Add a voice note for elders. A short spoken invitation from a parent is warm and easy to understand.
  • Send at a sensible local hour. Use the table above, so a message does not ping someone at 3:00 AM.

Bringing It All Together

A Nepali or South Asian wedding in the USA brings together guests from many places. Your invitation can make that easy: one section per event, one-line explanations, clear dress notes, times your relatives can read at a glance, and an early date for anyone who needs a visa.

If you want all of this in one link, look at designs like Laali, Mahal, Mehendi and Swayambar. See how we help couples in the USA, and check our pricing: you pay once, with no subscription and no charge per guest.

Questions people ask

How early should we invite relatives from Nepal or India to a wedding in the USA?

Tell them the date as soon as it is fixed, ideally 8 to 12 months ahead. Visitor visa appointments can take time, so a late invitation can mean a relative simply cannot get there.

Do relatives need an invitation letter for a US visitor visa?

The US State Department says a letter of invitation is not needed to apply for a visitor visa and is not a factor in the decision. Officers look at the applicant's own ties to their home country.

Should we send one invitation for all events or separate ones?

One invitation with a clear section for each event is easiest for guests. If some guests are invited only to the reception, give them a version that shows only the events they are invited to.

What time zone should a wedding invitation use for guests abroad?

Always print event times in the venue's local time. In the message you send to family abroad, add one line with the time back home, such as Nepal time, so nobody has to work it out.

Is it okay to send a wedding invitation to elders by WhatsApp?

Yes, many families do, but call first. A personal call from a parent, followed by the link, shows the respect elders expect and makes sure they know to open it.

Can the invitation be in both English and Nepali?

Yes. Nimtto invitations come in English and Nepali, so names, dates and greetings can appear in both. Ask a family member to check the Devanagari spelling of every name before guests see it.

What should a dress code line say for a multi-day wedding?

Give one short note per event, such as bright colors for the mehndi or formal wear for the reception. Mention comfortable shoes for outdoor events or a long procession.
