What is janku?

Janku is a series of Newar old-age rites that celebrate an elder’s long life. The first, Bhimratharohan, is held at 77 years, 7 months and 7 days, with rites, a chariot procession and a family feast. Later jankus mark even greater ages. Families invite relatives from near and far.

What do you write on a janku invitation?

Write the elder’s name, the family’s names, the day (many families add Nepal Sambat to Bikram Sambat and AD), the venue and the programme, with the time of the procession and the feast. Nimtto sets it in English, Nepali or both, with a map and replies.
